Chapter 7

Climbing back into his van and driving through the gates, the tyres hit a deep pothole as they entered the grounds, which caused the two passengers in the back some discomfort.

Both David and Leah looked through the back windows again, but this time they couldn’t make anything out. Wherever they were, it was dark and secluded.

Mark switched the engine off and stepped out. The Howdens braced themselves as they listened to their captor’s footsteps crunching in the snow as he made his way to the back. He opened the door and rooted around, moving various tools to the side. When he couldn’t find what he was looking for, he grunted and pulled David by his arms, getting him out first. ‘Stand right there, do not move!’ he ordered as he reached in and grabbed hold of Leah, pulling her out and standing her up right. With their ankles restricted, the couple swayed to keep their balance.

Mark bent over and searched in the back of his van.

The air was bitterly cold as large snowflakes fell onto their faces.

David bumped his shoulder into Leah’s, and when she turned to look at him, he motioned with his head as his eyes darted about, asking where they were.

Leah shrugged her shoulders and inspected the huge, crumbling building that Mark had parked behind. It was hard to tell in the dark and heavy snowfall, but she was sure the building had once been a warehouse of some sort. The lorry bays to her left now had trees growing through the cracks in the concrete, and the wall on the east side of the building had collapsed, so you could see into the unnerving and murky warehouse. The noise of running water could clearly be heard from her left. From the way David nodded at her and then in the direction of the water, she knew he had also heard it.

Is he expecting us to jump in with our hands and legs tied? Leah asked herself. We’ll freeze to death.

‘What?’ Leah whispered, but David didn’t have the chance to answer.

‘This will do,’ Mark sighed, straightening and closing the van door. He was holding a torch in one hand and the kitchen knife in the other. Switching the torch on and shining it on the ground in front of the Howdens, he said, ‘Get walking in that direction!’

David tried to speak, but his words made little sense. Mark leaned over and ripped the tape off his mouth.

‘Ahh, Jesus!’ David winced. ‘How do you expect us to walk?’ he asked, looking down at his restricted ankles.

‘You can hop!’ Mark sneered and pushed him forward.

David took two hops to stop himself from falling over, straightened and said, ‘You can’t be serious!’

Mark looked at Leah and smirked, jerking the torch in the direction he wanted them. Leah shook her head and hopped forward, making it to David’s side. A few hops in, and unable to make out the ground due to the thick blanket of snow, David slipped and fell, landing on his knees.
